All you ever do on this board is show up and attack womxn for being womxn, LBGTQ+ for being LBGTQ+, people of color for being people of color. (laughs). I assume my feelings towards them are what Wesley-haters endure. Then that very well could be something for not just women but everyone to aspire towards. Sure, its not perfect, we all have a nitpick here and there, but as long as it has a message, it revolves around people, and some cool science stuff, its trek to me. Its shall we say very variable. With his skill and abilities, we will see how he may use them in a way that may affect his relationship with Michael Burnham. With predictive spelling and multiple languages available, incorrect word choice is a constant threat even when one does type in the correct word. That is why you never saw councelors on any other class ship. I think that she is one of the go-to people when there is hard science stuff to crack. It is incredibly bad and is a publicly dangerous message to be sending. We have no information that Beyer consults in this show. So I think we pick up with her after some time has passed since the events of that season, but shes still sort of not really sure what to make of it, and everything that used to be really comfortable isnt sitting as comfortably as it used to if that makes sense. That was an awfully fast turnaround. Episodes will be. I guess making Tilly first officer isnt anywhere close to ridiculous as making KT Kirk a Captain who was still a cadet and had probably spent 2 weeks in space before he got the jobbut its pretty damn close. Michelle Yeoh, considerably smaller in physical stature, probably weighs around 90# [because she is allll muscle]. Rumors started when some problematic fans of Star Trek Discovery found out that she gained a few pounds between the seasons. Mack is one of the core group of Trek authors going back to shortly before Nemesis. She isnt back on Discovery. Like damn the guy's 90 ffs give him a break. Her character, Sylvia Tilly, has had plenty of opportunities to shine without giving anything away, and Wiseman has risen to the occasion. That was why she was never in uniform the first few seasons. I dont read the same type of criticism for their male actors. MS Wiseman owns the sadistic Bitch Capt Killy like she does Tilly. I think Saru holds out as being the most consistent, and Tilly is close, but not quite. I think the character would have been much better served if Tillys quirks were something that changed as the character grew over the seasons. Sigh all you like, but thats not going to magically make physics and biology work differently. I realize there are people who like his quirks. Discovery may have just said goodbye to one of its crew, but don't worry: She'll be back. )Granted, I think the special effects, space battles, bizarre technology and explosions are the proverbial tail wagging the dog, but thats always been the case, and is increasingly expected in these post-Star Wars, high tech decades. Story: With . In fact, it says far more about the body-shamers than it does about those being body-shamed. I LOVE the future! How does Tillys scientific mind come into play in solving the crisis of the anomaly in season four? Disco has a lot of problems storywise But not her looks! Sometimes it worked over amazing distances other times not. Contents 1 Early life 2 Starfleet career 2.1 USS Discovery 2.1.1 The war 2.1.2 Post-war 2.1.3 32nd century 3 Personal relationships 3.1 Friendships Nah Book is Boba Fett and I want to see the spin-off series THE BOOK OF BOOK :-). The writing for him is trying in season 1, but from Samaritan Snare onwards I actually think hes kinda endearing and has decent utility. Ridiculous or not, it has been well established in Trek canon that starships have counselors/therapists, and they are often used by the crew. Plus, TNG literally had a therapist as part of the bridge crew. After the first two seasons of high pressure I thought I would have seen more growth. One reason why I think people gravitated towards Trip the most on Enterprise was that the combination of writing and performances created one of the most believable humans in Star Trek this side of Dr. McCoy and Chief OBrien. My condolences to you, for your mum. Lol. That promise was fulfilled in last weeks season finale, and Wiseman is talking about her return. I would expect more from the Star Trek crowd, which is usually quite enlightened. And others opinions dont factor in. For what its worth Picard has an excellent cast, male and female, it just feels they are one or two notches above their discovery peers, maybe again due to writing/direction. Editor's note, 23 Dec 2020: If you like Wiseman's interview here, then you should also check out interviewer Dawn Ennis's other work. I echo your sentiments exactly, David. I believe we can thank Mack for helping the Showrunners and writers identify species that would work in Prodigy and for some deep cuts. Such use is more overt in DISCO, but it is by no means out of the ordinary. KevinB: Oh, I agree with you, in the sense that nothing is perfect and there are flaws and issues here and there. In fact, at least on this website, I often see the contrary. And, in that sense, it is okay to be used as it was above. Xanadu? David Ajala: I think its made Cleveland Booker even more attracted to Michael Burnham because I think he looks and goes Oh, scrumptious. Development for the fifth season of Discovery is well underway, with production expected to begin in June. My point is, a lot of the shamers are probably ashamed of themselves for being overweight and project it onto others. It feels too 21st century specific as does Tillys. Its all relative, but I dont see a lot of actors being body-shamed. Tilly is the product of lazy writing and a lazy showrunner. Most actresses on TV, if theyre 58 probably weigh 120# or less. Just blows my mind. Someone with a lack of intelligence throws a race card at every debate. If you read what Mary and Sonequa are saying, they arent promoting any particular body style or fitness choice, just that they are as they are and only they have the right to choose how that should be. TrekMovie.com is not endorsed, sponsored or affiliated with CBS Studios Inc., Paramount Pictures Corp. or the Star Trek franchise. She let go in S4 of her parents expectations and embraced a new purpose. Anyway it was just a thought. Harry wasnt annoying watching him was just sad :-D. Im glad for you that you didnt find him annoying. Nice girl but still jostling with Burnham as the most annoying character on the show. My point was Why does the ships therapist have a bridge station? They have solved some of these issues the easy way by talking themselves out of it (Klingon hair, holograms, Ariam being no android at all), now that we are in the future none of it really matters anymore. I admit, has been a roller coaster between each season. Please dont ban me!). But Tilly and the nervous mess Adira has devolved into? Maybe having had to step up to the plate before she was ready I think she intellectually knows that she didnt fail, and that its not her fault that Osyraa took the ship, she didnt have all the information, but I still think the fact that that she took command and somehow lost the ship would be an enormous blow to her confidence and make her question a lot of stuff. In every real-life Trekkie community Im a part of, as well as most online, shes loved. Of course my original statement still stands regarding Tilly becoming Sarus Number One. Like a lot of people, she pivoted and found herself in a new role as teacher. Bullied badly as a child and teen so I know what I speak of; Im just glad I grew up pre-Internet, and I sympathize with any nowadays who have to deal with Internet bullying on top of real world bullying. Come on she looks great. I dont think Tilly is ruined. Way too many issues. Her empathic abilities work via viewscreens? With Discovery now firmly planted in the distant future, Paradise notes the importance of ensuring that that show remains connected to the larger Star Trek universe through well-placed references . He was a cool character and one of the best things about season 3. Just like every other character in a show that generally is badly written. For people who dont know, it had to do with Voyager leading a fleet of ships going back to the Delta Quadrant a few years after Voyager arrived home. Tilly looks great and her weight is a not a issue. Body shaming is just another category of bullying, with the same general goal of the shamer making him/herself feel superior by putting down others around them, rather than elevate him/herself with goodwill and compassion. Make better choices. Thats the thought I had last season, when they had the perfect chance to wirte out Burnam (I believe it was Reunification III or the one after that) and they just didnt follow through at the end. From what Ive read, having her on the bridge because of her betazed abilities was what Roddenberry had in mind. I love how Disco has put the human back into the human experience. Of all the issues I have with Star Trek Discovery, Mary Wiseman/Tilly is definitely not among them. Try the Daily Mail for 5 minutes. However, the problem with Tilly (and this really is more of a Star Trek Discovery problem because it exists with every character they do this to) is that she never made strides or attempts to improve. Somewhere in the bowels of Secret Hideout, they invented a computer program that can cobble together scripts that fit various parameters. Do I want to be Barclay or Harry Kim? Its her, Adira, Stamets, and Reno who are the really hard science people. She doesnt inspire confidence. Well second most after Burnam , she was fine in season 1 and 2.past 2 seasons theyve rushed her character developmentsame with michael.the vulcan minded human became human real fast. Can Picard go round the sun once more and rescue Saru from Discovery? Not sure what her weight has to do with anything. We need to examine our highest ideals and allegiances to reveal our preconceived notions, shallow knee-jerk reactions, and find the truth about our choices. No, from Starfleets POV its 3 years. I keep hearing the word heartthats the poorest excuse yet. David Ajala: Yeah. I have nothing against Mary Wiseman. Mary Wiseman as Tilly in episode 402, Anomaly. Fans need to stop being rude and act like gentlemen for once. I agree with you on principle as far at this being fine on a fictional Star Trek show. Whether you choose to believe it or not, youre actually part of the problem. Sonequa, Their characters are fantastic as are all the others. This is a part of the reason people cant take to them, alongside their poorly written characters. The door is open, I suppose, if that show should fail for some reason, but I doubt theyll just throw her back into the same role on the ship like nothing ever happened. She strikes me as no different than Barkley. The frequency and level of mockery and hate, very often is targeted to the female actors, for them to behave like women, to behave as woman leaders. I absolutely love Tilly/Killy. You cant be a Star Trek fan and also be a racist or a body shamer. I see other people mentioning the books on Reddit and Youtube because of the new show obviously. Ichebs torture on Picard was horrible and the eating ganglia in S1, yikes! I hope that Wiseman uses that info into the future because it does work for fat burning and muscle building.. There is such a difference between having criticisms of the way the characters are written and criticizing the actors performance/craft and their leadership in the company. Shes not going anywhere. Overall, I like the fun character of Tilly (too bad the writers room made her first officer). That will be the one I read first! I would just be happy if Rhys got more than three lines an episode lol. Shes changed. Also the writers, Erika Lipoldt and Bo Yeon Kim. We love that someone who isnt super fit was cast, especially that its a woman. Youre perfect as you are. As an officer shes supposed to be leader. At New York Comic Con, TrekMovie participated in some group interviews with members of the cast and crew,. Mary Wiseman: Right, when you use empathy for evil, its manipulation. Too nervous and anxious. Rather than shaming them or acting like there are only a few kinds of women worth aspiring to be. From the next episode on season 3 which was at least okay up to that point started to completely fall apart. The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery's Season 4 finale. Bad writing, illogical story arcs, unbalanced tempo, underdeveloped characters or sudden jumps in character development. There are a lot of people in the comments hating, but in a franchise that includes Neelix, Wesley Crusher, Naomi Wildman, Kes, and Lwaxana Troi, Tilly is frankly nowhere near as annoying as those other characters. And its funny that you bring up needing constant therapy as a bad thing when a ton of real life people see a therapist on a regular basis. But I really do like Book a lot! No one of my Trekkie friends, growing up with TNG watch this anymore. That does so much emotional damage to a personbut it also says a lot about those doing the body-shaming. The increasingly repeated notion that Discovery has saved the Trek franchise with emotion and humanity is dubious revisionist history. Im sure nearly everyone of the crew of TNG had issues and problems. Well, its certainly a good thing that Tilly is a fictional character, and neither she nor the woman who plays her (Wiseman) is in todays real-world Navy.. Im sorry if the idea of someone not like Discovery upsets you, but its unreasonable to expect people to change their minds for that reason. You can start with those or the later books in the Time to sequence without significant confusion. I thought her arc was going to end with her being booted from the service for repeatedly failing physical fitness tests? However, if we got to see Tilly gradually improve herself. Overweight is a risk of becoming obese. Typical. Everybody loves ., meant literally, is never true. In this week's episode of Star Trek: Discovery season four, we saw Tilly leaving her crew and heading to the academy in order to foster young minds. Its been sooo inconsistent from day one. Acceptance? Sonequa Martin-Green in Unification III, Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise shared some behind-the-scenes photos from Terra Firma, Part 2.. I'm finding Star Trek Discovery to be incredibly dull and childish. Remember , they had steroids and thyroid problems in the 80's, but the majority of people were off normal weight, which today would be called skinny. Mary shouldnt listen to the haters and Sonequa, I never noticed she looked any different than she did before, body wise. To me, at least. KevinB: I let go of my preconceptions about what star trek is.. There is also the issue that a crew needing constant therapy sessions while regularly saving the galaxy is not an easy narrative trick to pull off. Its gotten very stale now. That however does nothing to mitigate the way Burnham has been written to be unforgivably self-absorbed throughout many of the key moments of the series. Everyone in the world do not look and act the same if it was for me, it would be a very boring uninterested world. I think Mary is amazingly pretty and has absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of her figure. There are characters you really cherish and others that are fun but ultimately nothing special. She hopped over those 900 years. No probably not. Full Circle is pretty dark in some ways. My personal opinion is, if you see ribs in their low decolletage, they are probably not so healthy. Wasnt it Saru who made Tilly the First Officer? David Ajala: What about Grudge in the mirror universe? Jake is about 45-50 and one of the two lead characters. Although it is true that on *average*, overweight people are less healthy than other people, it is also entirely possible to be overweight and healthy. If you cant understand that message, then you are very much part of the problem. Right! Do you see that tension? Cant believe some fans complain about character A or B or C. I am sorry, but the obsessive complaining about Sonequa/Michael or Mary/Tilly, for who they are, is so rude. Shes beyond perfect with her line delivery. I actually had an entire epic story mapped out that I was seriously considering turning into a series of novels. Tons do, yes. After all, it DOES seem as though Tilly is gone from the crew for the time being. Shes fantastic and looks fantastic doing it! Unless you want to count Ezri Dax she was a therapist but I dont believe she heald a high ranking command position. Yet, she is. By existing? But how the women look?! Perhaps season four will address Burnham and Tillys unreadiness on more than an emotional level. I found him quite annoying, myself. Mary Wiseman claims that she wants to inspire all the curvy women around the world with her Star Trek weight gain story. That said, I know people can be cruel and I am even worried bringing up this topic for fear of the idiot fringe piling on, but I hope Mary Wiseman is okay or has a good reason for her weight gain since S1. So many characters, and all were very well developed with interesting stories. The doctor was usually the therapist. Mary's fans are curious to know if she is indeed expecting a little one but the rumors are false. Hes been very creative in using callbacks and interweaving eras in his own work. I like the way you think! What is wrong, pretty bad to read, is fans mocking the actors, it is actually very sexist, not cool. Mary Wiseman said in an interview after her departing episode that she'd be back before the end of the season. So when very capable people feel un-capable, crazy things happen. Tilly, played by Mary Wiseman on Star Trek Discovery is not pregnant. And Kirsten Beyer probably consults on that show too along with her duties on Picard and Discovery, so its possible at least. In the latest Star Trek: Discovery episode, Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman) was tasked with . I would imagine those who liked Barclay probably include a large portion of those who like Tilly. Its 2020 and were taking any more of your sh!t. Im not counting on it. So her appearances ended up not being 100% awful. You misunderstood. I like seeing her in the series and like knowing that girls who are considered chunky by their teen or tween peers will know they can become something special and respectable, even if they dont have the ideal Hollywood body type. I have considered it and rejected it. There is a wealth of other outlets for health and fitness information, that frankly are more dispassionate and factual than getting health and fitness info from celebrities. Its could have (or couldve). And it was mentioned in one of the episodes of the first season, I dont remember whichwould have to research, that councilors on Galaxy class ships due to the fact that families were on the ship and it was meant for longer than 5 year missions. It inspired her to switch careers. She seems to be a lovely human being and all that in real life but her acting is not the best. That sucks, but that is just the way it goes. Saru would then recognize the potential in her, give her opportunities to build her self esteem and confidence, and wed get a good arc that doesnt seem forced like it does now. I want to really like Discovery, I do. Shes a badly conceived written and conceived character theyve desperately tried to bolster. And Tilly is the Trekkie. Finally, Starfleet isn't a military organisation or an army. She was annoying to me, and the crew gave her a lot of leeway. Good for her, and I love the character! Exactly. [1] Early life [ edit] Wiseman is the youngest daughter of Dorothy and Kevin Wiseman and has three older brothers. She opted that she had a different calling within the world of teaching and, in the end, she decided that she wanted to chase that feeling. You know, like a psychotic murderer? A person who we see strive to make themselves a better person. There is a great scene back in S1 when Tilly and Burnham are doing cardio training and post workout are eating their protien, carbs and fat nutrition, something that the body requires after a hard cardio workout. Star Trek: Discovery threw a shocker into its latest episode as Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly decided to leave the Discovery crew. Janeway is bridge crew, of course she was coming back! And I know Chakotay was also Captain on Voyager in those books as well. Some folks here like this nu trek because it lowered standards to make them feel better about themselves. Have to completely agree you T2. No one can argue that Shatner is anything less than fit at whatever age. And I just let the writers take me on a journey. There are still things that bother me about the new trek too. The accent is too colloquial. And so she will be part of this universe and this world for many years to come. Shes loved. DSC had many issues at the beginning. Somehow these insecure people feel others not like them are a threat to how they see themselves and how the world should, in their opinion, be. Tilly is part Wesley Crusher and part Barclay. ;). Theres even a scene where she pretty much turns to the camera and says that shell stay till the very end. Proceed accordingly. Although the last TNG with Trois mom wasnt terrible. If there had been a believable logical progression from Cadet Tilly in season 1 to Starfleet Academy instructor in season 4, where they had built up the character to where she shed bits and pieces of the awkwardness as she became more confident in her abilities. But of course this being Star Trek they SPOILER ALERT bring her back to life! The writers may love the character, but they also appreciate that the actor is a real person who might want variety in their career. I read somewhere that Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis had somewhere in their contract a stipulation that they had to fit into their costumes. Yes I forgot David Mack is a consultant on this show too and is well aware of all the post-Nemesis stories in the novels. Its sci-fi, brah. Just when it looks like the character has finally grown as a person and doing her own thing, comes right back. Where are they!? I for one have always had to watch my weight and I still wage the battle to this day. Thats the whole point why they wanted HER to teach at the newly formed Academy They wanted someone with the original 23rd century optimism and enthusiasm I share that notion a lot And yeah, Im glad Starfleet doesnt work like actual military, And no, S3 was not stupidity. I wanted to be bigger and I spent much of my childhood, adolescence and even into my young adulthood doing all kinds of things to get bigger. She laughs at the memory. :-), What, you mean you dont follow your patients around at work, giving suggestions? But my point was that she rarely conveyed anything useful or something that was not already obvious to all. Although they didnt really use secondary characters wellthey still dont. The audience is growing due to our amazing loyalty, but I give them credit toobecause Discovery, we have all these new shows. Youve got to hand it to Harry Kim. Keep up the great work ladies! Sisko on the other hand. should take a pear of pruning shears and cut off that little pecker of yours (its what Killy would do). Han Van Sciver and Mary Wiseman in At the Wedding (Photo: Marc J. Franklin), Watch Wiseman and cast and crew talk about the season four finale. Its intolerance in its most basic form, and anyone who engages in, advocates for, or turns a blind eye and deaf ear to it are examples of the worst humanity has to offer, and most certainly have no business calling themselves a Star Trek fan. I could watch Tilly all day! I hope that Wiseman uses that info into the future because it does work for fat burning and muscle building. Where did all the good writers go?? As I said Tilly has the same issues. Ive finally had the chance to reply to your comment about Lue Elizondo etc on the other thread. The problem is, very deep into his 80s, and theres still chatter about him playing the action hero. But Barclay is just irritating as hell. When I was around 12 I used to eat peanut butter and drink Ensure, a meal replacement drink, before I went to sleep. 89. Her body shape is fabulousshe is gorgeous. Saying that its the job of actors to tell people whats healthy and whats not is the problem, not a solution. And yeah, some of us are coach potatoes, most of us certainly not gold cut supermodels. For your own good, please seek help. Thank you for your counter opinion. I dont think youre ready for that kind of interaction, online, or anywhere else. (80's for ya) That was always the theory I had for Barclay. Have you ever read those? . But the characters are pitch perfect. So I was also just very excited for the fans. (But then she has always reminded me, her looks and bubbliness, of my cousin who just so happens to be a wonderful teacher. The actors are not slaves to the fans or public opinion. The only thing she is qualified for at Starfleet Academy is as a 23rd century specialist. The very basis of Star Trek is in direct conflict with people like that. Keep up with all the news and reviews from the newStar Trek Universe on TV at TrekMovie.com. Key difference in thinking, and it makes all the difference in the big picture! Control over ones own body is the most basic freedom we should have. Cant believe people are so rude as to insult anyone because they dont look the way they expect. At the end of season three, I felt that she became captain not because she had earned it, but because the time had run out on the series plan for her promotion. Shes only competent because of her character shield, shes mentally and emotionally immature, out of shape for the job shes in and the role she wanted to perform, and would barely survive in a high school, let alone in any capacity at an actual Starfleet. You either think about what you can contribute to society or how society owes you handouts, respect for above-mentioned bad habits, fictitious pronouns even. As for the debate about sending the message being overweight is good: the heart of the issue is that everybodys body is their own, not health and physical fitness. Tilly is justannoying. Even though she's still in the final season of Starfleet Aacademy studies She was assigned to the USS Discovery to get some practical experience. That is assuming the this Starfleet Academy show is set in the 32nd century. As far as science fiction most Trek shows have normal looking ppl. Gotta side with Sascha here. I basically just know the books that gets discussed or reviewed here. For now, Wiseman is busy starring in the new comedy play At the Wedding at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York. Personally I would put Barclay and Trois Mom in that group too, but not sure recurring characters belong with regulars in this race. I feel bad saying this but Ive never a read a Star Trek novel in my life lol. Right? Shaming is one thing. It makes it quite American centric. I agree, the writing, character development, and story telling needs to improve. Harry wasnt annoying. Stupid decision to bring her back. I have to agree. Most of what she did was convey the amazingly obvious like offering such useful insights such as, Hes concealing something but I dont know what. And her abilities were never fully defined. These are not well-written or well-acted characters, and they weaken the series every time they show up. Hahahaha! I agree, in fairness Barclay was relatable in many ways, socially awkward but not too overplayed. If we dont have tolerance and respect, how are we able to learn and improve humanity!? Why is that a command level position? I guess some people would rather the perfect people of TNG than anyone that mirrors back anything they dont want to see in themselves. People sit around a lot more nowadays for a lot of reasons. Everybody loves is an idiom, it should never be taken as a strict statement. Barclays ticks do get really annoying. Im not surprised people making mean comments, some people will find whatever they can that they know will upset everyone and say it.
